Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal uses advanced laser light technology to target the ink particles trapped within your skin. It does this by passing laser light safely through your skin where it targets the unwanted ink.  Because the light passes through the skin, it can do this without harming the surrounding tissue. After the light passes through, the ink particles then absorb the light energy, heat up, and shatter into much smaller ink molecules. The tiny shattered ink particles are consumed by your immune system and naturally flushed out of your body.

How many treatments will I need?

Tattoos are made up of varying layers of ink. In order to break up all the ink in a tattoo, virtually every patient will require multiple laser treatments. Keeping this in mind, the average number of treatments needed is between 5 to 10. However, patients with faded tattoos or those looking to lighten a tattoo for a cover-up may only need 3 to 4 treatments for desired results. Because all tattoos are different, the number of treatments needed is different for each patient. Evanesce Laser Tattoo Removal uses a variety of factors to determine the number of treatments your unique tattoo will need. These factors include:

  • Tattoo age
  • Tattoo location
  • Ink density
  • Ink depth
  • Type of tattoo (professional vs. amateur)
  • Pre-existing scarring
  • Patient skin type
  • Patient health

Does the laser hurt?

Depending on your pain tolerance, laser tattoo removal can feel like a rubber band being snapped against the skin or like getting a tattoo applied all over again. Luckily, laser tattoo removal is a very quick procedure that lasts as little as 30 seconds to 30 minutes depending on the size and number of tattoos being treated. Because of the potential for pain, we use the Zimmer Cryo cooling machine to numb the skin before, DURING, and after each treatment. This noninvasive technology helps soothe the skin and mitigate any pain associated with the laser.

Can you lighten my tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes! Evanesce can lighten tattoos to make cover-up tattoos easier to apply. Laser tattoo removal creates a lighter canvas for your tattoo artist to work on. Not only does this make the tattoo application process easier, but it also gives you and your artist more room for creativity. Laser tattoo removal decreases the amount of ink needed to cover-up your existing artwork and also allows you to incorporate additional colors other than black to completely conceal your old tattoo.

Can you remove a specific part of my tattoo?

We can do it all! Many clients wish to have a name, date, or design eliminated from their tattoo but wish to keep the surrounding artwork. Our Trinity laser uses a precise spot beam to selectively remove parts of a tattoo without causing damage or harm to the surrounding ink and skin tissue. Because of this technology, we can selectively remove any part of your tattoo while leaving the rest untouched.
